SOUTH DEVON PHOTOGRAPHY AND TUITION

Interior Photography – Shooting a Devonshire Gem

One of my favourite forms of photography is interior photography. This could range from high end interiors for magazines like ‘Beautiful Homes’ or classic shots for property including holiday lets. I have worked for Meero and Airbnb, so I was really excited when asked to photograph the Devonshire gem below. The owner had spent quite some time paying attention to detail and had turned the cottage into a beautiful characterful holiday let. What particularly struck me was the beautiful light that streamed in through the upper bedroom windows. This is the reason that I chose to shoot in a bright and breezy style. This was in contrast to my last interior shoot where my style was very different but worked equally as well with the kind of property being shot. Both owners were a joy to work with. Indeed, much of the pleasure I gain from this type of work, is ensuring I produce the right ‘look’. The rules around interior photography are quite interesting. It can often take some time crafting each image and balancing out exposures between underexposed interiors versus bright windows can be challenging. Some shots need bracketing to ensure all sensor data is present. I won’t […]

Holiday Let shoot in Paignton, South Devon

Well it’s that time of year again when I find I have a little more time on my hands when I’m not teaching.  Therefore it’s always an opportune time for updating my blog and listing some of my favourite projects from the last few months.  My client asked me to refresh her holiday cottage images and below is a short compilation of some of my favourites. I am also including some stills.  It was an absolute pleasure working on this particular shoot as the lady who owns the property had a real eye for interior design and meticulous attention to detail. Architectural, property and interior photography are all services that I offer and please get in touch if you would like a quote. Here are some of the stills the from the project.  If you are looking for a fabulous holiday home then you can book this property here. Silver By Charlotte

By far one of my personal favourite subjects to photograph is jewellery.  I really enjoy thinking of new ways to showcase artists’ work.  They spend so much time creating such beautiful objects, that I believe the resulting photographic images should also reflect this.  A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of working with Charlotte Dalrymple-Hay who owns Silver by Charlotte. Charlotte’s designs are timeless classics and her designs are beautiful.  I started to experiment with an initial image which you can see below: I quite liked this initial image as I felt that the silver colour worked well against the background.  I also added in some light steaks and dust scratches to add interest.  However I felt that the designs needed to be much more streamlined to accentuate the beauty of Charlotte’s Jewellery.  One of the classic issues with this type of photography is flare.  So if you are thinking of trying any projects like this, it is really important to control your lighting well.  Think not only about the subject you are photographing but also the reflections in it.  Flare can absolutely ruin an image especially when it is difficult to remove in editing software.  Watch out […]

Training to be Human

In September 2018 I was very privileged to shoot my local college’s immersive drama production called ‘Training to be Human’. This was yet another successful production which built on a previous immersive theme from the year before called Memoirs of a cinema. The cast and crew were absolutely amazing. Below are some of my favourite images from the evening. There are more images here.   [Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”66″ gal_title=”Training to be Human”]

Better Late Than Never

I’ve been so busy lately with one project or another, that my blog has taken a bit of a back seat. However with the half term holiday on the horizon, I’m able to spend a little time updating my blog with some projects from last year. What a year it was too! I undertook a number of commissions and I was thrilled to learn that Adobe had featured me in one of their blogs. I plan to document all of my missing projects from the latter part of last year, but in the meantime here is a small taster of some of what I created. Memoirs of a Cinema

In 2017 I covered a production by my local college at the ‘Old Picture House’ in Paignton, Devon.  The show was titled Memoirs of a Cinema and was both truly amazing and a highly immersive performance.  I have included some of my favourite images from the evening and one of my images was used as the poster to advertise the event. I am including a link to the full story of the evening and this includes many more images.  Event photography is rapidly becoming one of my more favourite types of photography as it is always fun trying to capture those special moments and action shots.  Please click on a thumbnail below to take you to a few of my favourite images. and please click this link to see the whole story of the evening.   [Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”46″ gal_title=”Memoirs of a Cinema”]

Secret Shutter Photography Used for Local Festival Tickets

In 2016 I was invited by the festival organiser at Lupton House to take some images of their annual festival.  I really enjoyed the day and I managed to produce some of my favourite photographs.  I was absolutely thrilled when I found out that one of my images was being used on the Lupton House facebook page and tickets to advertise their 2017 event. I will add some of my favourite moments from 2016, so please keep checking back.  The festival was great! and I can thoroughly recommend it as a great day out! Here is my image with text.

The Brixham Pirates’ Festival

“If you love #pirates or incredible #photos & #portraiture, you don’t want to miss this series from @secrethutter” – Adobe Spark In early May 2017, I was asked if I would cover the Brixham Pirates’s Festival. I was quite excited about this for a couple of reasons. Firstly, even though I lived in Brixham for a long time I had never been to see it. Secondly it would be a great opportunity to try out my hand at event photography. The event was great! I can certainly recommend it if you like Pirates and want to dress up and enter into the spirit of things.  There’s also plenty of great food and music as well!   Setting Goals I had a rough idea of shots required by the organisers, but I also wanted to ensure that I managed to cover as many people as possible across the event.  I also wanted to try to capture the spirit of the event and show how popular it is.  I really enjoyed meeting the pirates and I must have taken hundreds of shots.  Once finished it took me two weeks to edit!  Finally I managed to get a set of photographs that I […]

Beautiful Obelisks by Maya King

One of the great things about being a commercial photographer is that you get to work with some really creative artists. Over the last few weeks I have been really privileged to work with the highly talented Maya King.  Maya not only makes beautiful stained glass obelisks, she is also a highly skilled silversmith responsible for the beautiful jewellery featured in our jewellery gallery. One of the greatest challenges in photographing work of this nature is ensuring the correct exposure.  For example if you want to photograph wood and make it look beautiful there is a good chance that the beautiful radiance of the glass may be lost. Below is an excellent example of how the beauty of the wood is brought out in the image, but the radiance of the stained glass has been sacrificed.  Here this was deliberate in this particular shot, because the item was lit from the front in order to make the coloured shadow at the back. When stained glass is lit from behind its beauty becomes apparent, but as can be seen from the image below, some of the detail of the wood has been lost.  Again in this shot the lighting was deliberate […]

Jewellery Commission

These are images of our first jewellery commission. We had the privilege of photographing some really beautiful handmade silver pieces. They lend themselves to natural lighting which helped to enhance the beauty of silver. [Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”3″ gal_title=”Jewellery Commission”]
